Synopsis
Created by Felicity Packard and Greg Haddrick and directed by Matt King, Pine Gap seems like a good show. The scenes are based in Central Australia and they evoke some kind of mystery through Mr. Robot-like framing. People are speaking from the corner and bottom of the frame. Everybody in the mission central talks with headsets on, yet they are in the same room. This continues the creepy aura.
The background story of Pine Gap is an enduring alliance between the US and Australia. It involves intelligence officers from both countries. The earlier scenes depict a smooth spoken and meticulous US President, making the show smack into the current reign of Donald Trump. As the dramatic episodes hover around the base operation floor, the Pine Gap team tries to determine the people behind the shooting of a civilian plane that happened in Mynmar over the Apec summit. At this point, the US President and the Australian Prime Minister are working hand in hand. There arises a conflict regarding who shot the plane and their motives. This argument results in a change of personnel at the base. A new mission director is elected (Stephen Curry).
The main cast includes Gus (Parker Sawyers), the American guy who’s had a frustrating work experience. There is also Jasmina (Tess Haubrich), the communication analyst from Australia who wants to play her part in helping the world that has become a dangerous place. Her role includes explaining data that is being shown on the screens.
The Verdict
If you are a fan of international intrigues, then Pine Gap Review is worth watching. There are 6 episodes. Expect to see a lot of satellite surveillance and less action. Characters will be staring at machines most of the time. It may be slow but the ending is exhilarating. The fun part is trying to guess who the traitor is. Moreover, the players will be contending for 3 positions: Australia, Us, and China. In the end, Kath gives a speech about the US, purporting that the country is no longer the supreme world power. She continues to say that the US should “age gracefully,” leaving a very thought-provoking idea to reckon with.
