Traveling to India is a once in a lifetime adventure and, when you have it with your once in a lifetime love, it can become a place you want to journey to time and time again together. If you and your future spouse are considering a honeymoon in India, here are 4 tips for staying safe, comfortable and healthy while on your trip…
1. Watch what you eat.
While 4 and 5 star restaurant chains will likely have safe and amazing foods to chose from, you will need to be cautious when you are out on your own. Because raw foods are often washed in contaminated water, you will want to be careful to eat only fully cooked foods while in India. Choose restaurants that look busy, (this tells you the locals trust it), and avoid street vendors. If you can, also avoid meat. India has the lowest consumption of meat in almost any country in the world and you need only visit a local market to find that much of what the country does have is hanging in a warm environment.
2. Get an Indian SIM card.
You might be surprised to find that India has more cell phones than toilets. Almost everyone has a cell phone and it can make you feel safer when traveling abroad to keep yours handy. While you will need to file some paperwork to obtain an Indian SIM card, it is well worth the effort. You can even use apps that help you to locate a safe cab or figure out how to get from one place to the next if you get lost.
3. Dress modestly..
India is an ancient country that keeps many of its traditional ways even today. Even a t-shirt and jeans may be seen as revealing and the unwanted attention can make you feel uncomfortable… And sometimes make you unsafe. While you do not need to wear a long sari, choose loose fitting tops and pants. Mimic the local dress as closely as you can and remember that in India interactions between men and women work differently. Even a smile or wave can be seen as flirtatious. So use good judgement when engaging with the opposite sex.
4. Stick together.
Scams and hassles are very common in India. Use your gut and stick together. If nothing more… it will ease your mind.
A honeymoon in India is an eclectic journey of bright colors, beautiful scenery and memories that will last a lifetime. When you spend your first week as Mr. and Mrs. here, rest assured that it will be a trip well spent and one that you will never regret.
