An Insight To Alexandrite Cat’s Eye

Gem stones are a symbol of fashion as well as are associated with positive impacts on person’s life as per their particular zodiac signs or prominent planets.

Alexandrite Cat’s eye belongs to the chrysoberyl family of gems. Cat’s eye is considered as the fore giver of positivity and good luck in the life of wearer. It is one of the most beautiful and precious gems. The originality of cat’s eye is predicted by the silver white line that emerges and vanishes when the gem is rotated.

Chrysoberyl alexandrite is distinguished from other types of cat’s eye gems in a way that it undergoes a beautiful colour changing phenomenon. In sunlight it changes green to blue green colour and turns red to purplish red in incandescent light. This is the typical characteristic of chrysoberyl family gems.

The cat’s eye with chrysoberyl characteristics was discovered in Ural hills of Russia in 1800 and was named Alexandrite after the name of Tsar Alexander II Russia. Later it had also been discovered from the mines of Myanmar, Brazil, USA, China and Tanzania. The colour changing phenomenon is because of the substitution of Chromium with Aluminium in mineral’s atomic structure. When observed from different directions it represents three different hues ie. green, red or yellow orange.

The chemical formula of Alexandrite is BeAl2O4.[4][5] and it is an aluminate of beryllium. The crystal is dipyramidal and orthorhombic. It has a specific gravity of 3.5-3.84, with a mohs scale hardness of 8.5.
The natural chrysoberyl alexandrite is found rarely and its cost is also very high. The more intense colour phenomenon an alexandrite exhibits, more is its price. To meet the requirements of cost effective gem, many gem labs have been undergoing processing of artificial alexandrite made by flux grown process. The other types of artificial alexandrites are Czochralski and hydrothermally grown alexandrite.

The presence of natural inclusion in flux grown type makes it similar to natural gem.

Due to its miraculous colour variations, it is considered as reservoir of positive energy, healing vibrations and motivational energy. On rubbing the gem on a cloth, if the brilliance increases than it is original. Artificial gem has curved growth lines on its surface.

People with prominent Ketu in their birth chart, with prominent planets in nakshatras ruled by Ketu ie. Magha, Ashwini or Moola and those with their ruling number as 7,16 or 25 are suggested to wear Alexandrite Cat’s eye. It eradicates any negative energy from the surroundings and generates positive vibrations that help the wearer to cope up with stress and anxiety in difficult situations. It also opens ways to happiness and prosperity by evading any negativity from mind and clarifying the life path.
