Everyone is good at something. Some people know what they are good at from a young age while others don’t discover their talent until later in life. Some people learn their talent through trial and error as children trying out new and different things that their parents get them involved in. Others dabble in various endeavors later in life and find the thing they are good at in the process.

When it comes to singing, this is not a talent anyone is naturally born with but a talent that is learned over time and improved with practice. Like any other talent, an individual may learn at a young age that they want to sing. Others may dabble later in life and wish to pursue it further. It doesn’t matter how you discover that you want to be a singer. What matters is how you learn because singing is a talent that requires a lot of practice.

The first thing you need to start on your journey is the want to learn and a want to put the time and effort into it to make that a reality. Once you decide that you can make the commitment, it’s time to start the learning journey.

Before you go any further, try to sing on your own. Play a song you like or sing on your own in front of the mirror. Record yourself so you can hear what you sound like. Don’t despair if you can’t yet carry a note! This takes practice!

The next step is to take lessons. Yes, you will need at least a few lessons so you can learn some theory and get some tips on how you can improve. Singing is not as easy as it looks! It’s like playing an instrument with your own voice. You will need to learn what the different notes are and how to go from one to another flawlessly.

Lessons can be done in person or over the internet. In-person lessons are best for acoustics reasons but you can learn just as well online through tutorials, videos or virtual lessons with an instructor.

Learning to read music is not necessary but it is very helpful if you want to take your singing to a more professional level. Once you have some lessons under your belt and know some theory and have the knowledge to be able to practice on your own, soon you’ll be singing full songs and who knows, maybe even writing your own!
