Get the Top End Right

While you may think that this isn’t harmful when a boat is over-propped the engine is forced to work harder which raises the combustion temperature and places stress on the internal parts. On the other hand, under-propping a boat is equally as harmful to your engine. This is why you need to change the propeller pitch.
Treat Fuel
Ethanol gas ruins a boat’s engine especially when the water is separated from the fuel. Even when you use your boat frequently this can still cause damage. For this reason, you shouldn’t only be using an ethanol-free gas but you should also be using an additive. Doing so will prevent the corrosion that can seriously impair your outboard’s productivity.
Flush After Each Use
The key to longevity rests in regular freshwater motor flushes. This is because these keep the colling passages cool and open, prevent corrosion, and extend the longevity of your water-pump impeller. Make sure you do this every time you pull back into the slip.
Replace Oil and Oil Filters
Since your outboard engine continually runs at very high RPMs it’s imperative to keep fresh, clean oil in your engine. Changing the oil filters every time you use your boat will make the oil even cleaner. You also need to start your outboard with the proper cooling water circulating through it.
Make Sure Your Engine Has Coolant
When your outboard has a water supply you can run it on land. However, you should never dry-start it even for a few minutes. Doing so will cause a build-up of heat and damage your water-pump impeller which can result in shaking nuts and loose bolts.
Maintain the Prop
When your propeller becomes damaged or bent it’s bad for your entire boat. This will result in vibration which is bad for your boat’s bearings and seals.
