So, you are an expectant mommy and the time is getting closer and closer to meeting your new little human. If you are anywhere from 36 weeks pregnant onward, you should already have your essential items packed in your bag, ready for when the big day arrives. If you have not done so yet, it is highly advisable that you do so as soon as you can.
Once you are certain that your bag is packed and you have checked it for the millionth time, it is time to get your newborn hospital outfit packed for when he/she arrives. The sooner you do so, the better for you and baby because there is no telling exactly when your bundle of joy will want to make their appearance. Being ready is key to not having to stress more than you need to on the big day. If you are booked in for a Cesarean, it is very different because you will know exactly when the baby will be coming.
What to Pack in the Hospital Bag for your New Baby
If you will be driving home with your newborn, it is essential that you have an appropriate car seat on your list of items to take with you. The hospital will NOT allow you to leave with your baby if you do not have a car seat for them. Make sure that you install it ahead of time.
A newborn hospital outfit will be needed on the day you are going home with the baby. Since you will not know exactly how big the baby will be, it is recommended that you choose an outfit that is between 0 and 3 months and in a neutral color if you do not know the sex of the baby beforehand. If it is cold weather, remember to pack in socks and a hat as well.
You must have your pediatrician’s information with you as well, as the nurses and doctors will be asking for this information more than just once. Try to include either an email address or fax number so that the hospital can send your baby’s medical records to them with ease.
If you are not planning on breastfeeding, you must also pack bottles into the baby bag. At least two is a good idea, as well as the formula that you have chosen to feed your baby. Not all hospitals will have samples available for you.
Depending on where in the world you live, you may need to pack in diapers and wipes. Just check ahead of time to be sure.
