PDFs are becoming the standard for writing company terms and conditions, newsletters, policies, announcements, training materials, how to’s, and almost every communication document in companies. While some PDFs are short, others, such as training materials, are too lengthy and boring. But, do you know you can easily convert your PDFs to eLearning modules for easy learning?
An e-learning module lasts for 15 — 30 minutes with one or two learning concepts. It involves a blend of assessment and teaching tools that may include social media, video clips, gaming elements, and direct instruction. Therefore, this guide gives you 7 easy steps to convert your lengthy and boring PDFs into interactive and lively eLearning modules.
- Divide your PDF document into sections. Analyze each section to see if it can be broken down further. Don’t combine sections that can function as standalone. Set an objective for each standalone section.
- Create bullet points from the paragraphs on your PDF document. For example, an introduction that talks about why compliance training is important can be broken down into bullet points entitled, “Importance of Compliance Training”.
- Avoid going beyond the second level of indentation. More than two levels may cause the learner to lose the mental flow of the main heading. Instead, convert these subcategories into standalone topics.
- Add informative multimedia, such as videos, labelled diagrams and images. Make sure they communicate a relevant message to encourage learner interaction. You can incorporate clickable chain processes or diagrammatic life-cycles to enhance the learning process. The learner can click on these clickable stages/steps for further information.
- In the case of technical terminologies or difficult words, mouse over events can do very well. When a learner hovers the mouse over a difficult word, a short description should appear in a box or bubble. Make it easier for the learners to gain knowledge without having to leave the e-learning platform.
- Make use of bright colored call-to-action buttons to catch the attention of the learners. Create a sense of urgency and the urge to find out more through the use of CTA verbs, such as ‘begin the course’, ‘read more’ and ‘click here’.
- To enhance interactivity, embed short crossword puzzles or quizzes in your module. Test your learners with these quizzes after each module and keep their scores. This will motivate them throughout the course.
PDF documents are a source of high quality and rich training material but unfortunately, they may not keep learners on track. However, converting your lengthy PDFs into eLearning modules saves the day.
